Olympic Games

The Olympic Games are the world's foremost international sporting competition, featuring summer and winter sports competitions in which thousands of athletes from around the world participate in a variety of events. They are considered the ultimate pinnacle of athletic achievement.

Colorado is the only state to actively turn down the Games. Denver originally won the bid to host the 1976 Winter Olympics. However, in 1972, Colorado voters rejected a bond issue to fund the games due to concerns over environmental impact and rising costs, forcing the IOC to relocate the games to Innsbruck, Austria.

The very next Olympic event is the 2026 Winter Olympics, which will be hosted by Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo in Italy.

The four-year interval honors the origins of the ancient Olympic Games, which were held every four years in Olympia, Greece. The ancient Greeks used this four-year period, known as an "Olympiad," as a method of measuring time. The modern Olympics adopted this same cycle to respect that history.
